Escape Room Visit
In November, we went to visit our client - Great Yarmouth Escape Rooms. We got briefly shown around the building to see behind the scenes of the rooms and then got split into two groups. My group got to go first and we did the horror room that they provide. We got shown a brief that pulled us into the world and got straight into it
Instantly. the atmosphere was intense setting the scene straight away. We got right to doing the puzzles and exploring the room, looking for any little clue we could. The first room had quite a bit in it, getting us a bit stuck at some points, as we didn't know which thing to look at, although we did work it out without much help. Once we'd completed the first room, the door to the second burst open, scaring us all, as we were very engrossed in the tasks at hand. The third and fourth rooms were much the same, with us getting very engrossed and then shouting at Daniel to get in the fridge
After we had finished with our room, we got to go behind the scenes to watch the other group play their room, the Wizard themed escape room. It was a very different experience to ours and relied more on the difficulty and complexity of the puzzles, rather than distracting the player using the atmosphere. They also managed to complete the room in time and we could then explore both rooms with no time limits or the atmospheric effects going on. It was very interesting to look at the props around the room and all of the puzzles and mechanics that they involved.
Being able to explore the escape rooms like this helped to produce many ideas for our own games, such as how to decorate a setting, some puzzle ideas and how to make the puzzles flow together. It was a very helpful opportunity, and was a great learning experience.
